Business is booming for a growing army of private military contractors, who take their military training and offer it to the highest bidder.  Modern-day mercenaries are stationed throughout the world fighting conflicts for governments that are reluctant to use their own troops.

While an army of 5,000 heavily-armed contractors recently replaced official American forces in Iraq, and many more  have been recruited to protect private interests in the region, mercenaries are sent to many places that may surprise you.

G4S  (formerly Group 4 Securicor)  is a global security services company headquartered in Crawley, United Kingdom.

Erinys International is a British private security company registered in the British Virgin Islands.

Unity Resources Group is an Australian-owned private military company headquartered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Asia Security Group private army, headquartered in Kabul, Afghanistan. This company has belonged to the president's cousin, Hashmat Karzai, son of Khalil Khan Karzai.

DynCorp International is a United States-based private military contractor.

Triple Canopy, Inc. is a private company that provides integrated security, mission support and risk management services to corporate, government and non-profit clients. Headquarters, Reston, Virginia.

Aegis Defence Services is a British private military company with overseas offices in Afghanistan, Bahrain, Iraq, Kenya, Nepal and the United States.

Defion Internacional is a Lima, Peru based Private Military Company that recruits and trains security personnel, logistics personnel, administrative personnel and professional services personnel to provide world wide services. It has offices in Dubai, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Iraq. Their main contracts have been with Triple Canopy, Inc. and the U.S. Department of State involving the war in Iraq.
