Jordan Liflander, from Carolina, gave an emotional speech to thousands of people who attended a ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the attack.

He had claimed he was captain of Ladder 133 from New York city and had taken part in the rescue operation after the Twin Towers collapsed.

Liflander wore the full dress uniform of a fire-fighter and a FDNY firefighter's helmet during the speech.

He was given a standing ovation at the end of the speech at a college in South Carolina during which he said that his most poignant memory was attending 47 funerals in three weeks for fallen comrades.

But Liflander has now been forced to admit he was never a New York fire hero.

His false claims were revealed when members of Ladder 133 were tipped off about his story and called him to protest.

Liflander, a volunteer fire-fighter in Boiling Springs, South Carolina, came clean and admitted he had made up the story.

'It was just ego,' Liflander said.

'Silliness. Trying to fit in and be one of the guys. It just spiraled out of control and became a lie I had to live.'

Liflander said he had wanted to represent the views of real life NYC fire-fighters.

An FDNY spokesman confirmed Liflander had never worked for the city fire department, which doesn't have volunteers.

Liflander said the lie began when he worked at Cherokee Springs Fire Department where he was a paid volunteer.

As well as speaking at an event attended by thousands last year on the 10th anniversary of the terror attack he also spoke at two other smaller events.

Bill Youngson, a former captain of Ladder 133, said Liflander's deception was a slap in the face to all firefighters involved in 9/11.

'I'm outraged,' Youngson said.

'I'm sick and tired of people standing up and telling people these stories for a little bit of glory. People have cancer, I have asthma and we paid our dues.

'In six months, we buried more people than you've ever seen and to read this story — this lie — it has to stop. Put that guy on the wall of shame.'

Youngson said the entire ladder company is outraged.

'He's a clown and an imposter and I told his wife that,' Youngson said.
