The Haitian Health Ministry has announced that the number of people who have died of cholera in the country has reached 5,968 by the end of last month. ~ See related articles

The ministry also said on Sunday that 10 people succumb to the deadly disease every day, DPA reported.

Many health workers, however, believe the total death toll is higher, since this number does not account for those who die unreported and unknown in isolated areas of the country.

Since the cholera epidemic broke out in October, more than 420,000 people have been infected and another 600 cases are registered daily.

The disease is spread through contaminated water because the earthquake-battered Caribbean country does not have a sanitary water system in effect.

Most Haitians are still homeless due to an earthquake that struck the capital Port-au-Prince in January 2010.
