Honoring Aaron Russo

Today, February 14th, is the birthday of Aaron Russo.  Please take a moment today to reflect on the man and his final masterpiece,"America: Freedom to Fascism", the film Ron Paul credits for the explosive growth of the Ron Paul Revolution.

As a tribute to Aaron Russo, watch his eye opening documentary video America: Freedom to Fascism right here until March 1st.

When my wife and I traveled to California to visit with Aaron shortly before he passed, we knew it would be the last time we would get the chance to see him. We didn't want to admit it but we both knew.  Our experiences with him up until that moment were nothing short of legendary.

From the day I first saw "America: Freedom to Fascism", to Aaron's visits to Chicago, to the late night in his hotel suite strategizing the national release of his film, then to his bedside at Cedars Sinai Hospital, every experience with him was one to remember.

That night in his hospital room we sat in silence for a short time watching Pink Floyd Pulse on TV (my Fathers personal favorite).  Aaron instructed me that we were not to talk business, however the revolution he started, and I was now apart of was the only real business Aaron and I shared.  I couldn't talk with him about Bette Middler, Eddie Murphy or Led Zeplin, while I was fans of each, we had no common ground there.  Our common ground was our desire to wake the people from their slumber and motivate them to act in the name of preserving our liberty.

We spoke of many things that last night with Aaron, we spoke of the movie he never got to create and the blossoming Ron Paul Revolution.  He gave me leadership advice that I will forever cherish and he gave my wife a hug that she will never forget.

He asked me to keep his fight alive and to do something monumental after he passed on, he wanted to be remembered, and I promised my friend and mentor that I would do just that.

After the shocking phone call in the early afternoon of August 24th from my scheduled radio show guest, I was in disbelief.  Aaron was no longer with us.  I did not know what to do, I called author G. Edward Griffin, whom I also met while visiting Aaron in California, and asked him to come on my show to reflect with me that day.  It was never easy to broadcast a show whenever I heard about Aaron's health, but the show must go on as they say in Hollywood... and it still is.

It has taken me quite some time to figure out how I would honor the man and keep his dream alive... many months.  But sometimes God moves the gears in such a way that everything moves in perfect synchronization.  In late November of 2007, I came upon a coin maker and approached him with my idea.  At the time he was in the middle of moving his shop so he had little time to dedicate to the memorial project I delivered, but he was interested and he knew full well of the dangers our republic is in, including the North American Union.

As time progressed, the holidays passed, and drafts, ideas, and images passed between the coin maker and I.  Late one night, the coin maker contacted me and told me he was almost finished with the front of the coin, I instructed him to call me as soon as it was finished, no matter the time.

The phone rang at 4am.  Hardly asleep, I awoke to hear his voice tell me, "it is finished, check your email."  Wiping my eyes, I shuffled into my office to illuminate the room with only the glow of the computer monitor.  Plunking away at my keyboard, I logged into my email, there it was waiting for me, the front side of my memorial to the man that changed my life and millions more.  Upon opening the file I wept once again for my friend who could not watch his legacy exploding.  I left it on the screen for days as I awaited the completion of the backside.

The scenario duplicated itself several days later when the backside was reveled to me.  When I showed it to my wife we both looked at it and knew this was the monument Aaron couldn't fit into words that night in his hospital room.  When I showed it to my Grandfather he said, "Gary, Aaron is a man who deserves that honor."

My wife held his hand the whole time she sat next to him in the hospital that night, and I made sure he got his herbal drink that Ilona Blakeley placed him on. My wife and I said our final goodbyes to this legend, now our friend and hero that night.  Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" was playing in the back ground while Aaron drifted to sleep that night.

Aaron, we wish you were here, you would be proud.

"One people, one movement, freedom for all." -Aaron Russo 1943-2007, forever in our memory.
