The U.S. in 2008 hosted the most websites that spread malware in the world, with China following close behind, according to a new security threat report. The U.S. hosts 37 percent of all such sites, while China (including Hong Kong) comes in second with 27.7 percent, as Russia with 9.1 percent rounds out the top three.

"American computers, whether knowingly or not, are making a disturbingly large contribution to the problems of viruses and spam affecting all of us today," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for IT security firm Sophos Plc stated after the company issued the earlier this month.

"[I]t would be misleading to believe that other countries are also not contributing to the problem," the report states.

A "long tail" effect shows that more than 150 countries have been identified as hosting malware on web pages within their borders, Sophos research found.

Of the affected pages, 85 percent are on legitimate websites that have been hacked by criminals, the report states.

The U.S. share of malware infected sites shows an increase over 2007, when it accounted for 23.4 percent of the total.

China showed progress, however as its malware hosting sites dropped by more than half,or 51.4 percent since 2007.

The rest of the Top 10 sites in order are Germany (9.1 percent), South Korea (2.1 percent), Ukraine (1.8 percent), UK (1.7 percent), Turkey (1.5 percent), Czech Republic (1.3 percent), Thailand (1.2 percent). The remaining countries comprise 14.3 percent of the total.
