China rulers 'silencing dissent'

China rulers 'silencing dissent'

By Steve Jackson

BBC East Asia analyst

China has intensified efforts to silence dissent in the run-up to a key Communist Party Congress next week, human rights groups say.

The campaigners say the authorities have been arresting, abducting and intimidating activists to prevent them from staging protests.

China has stepped up security ahead of the Beijing meeting.

The congress will determine the direction the country takes for the next five years.

The 17th Communist Party congress is a major event in China.

It will reveal how the power balance between rival factions is changing, who the country's future leaders are likely to be and what the party's policy priorities are for the coming years.

The Chinese authorities do not want this showpiece occasion to be overshadowed by protests.

Debate Polls Vandalized - Oct. 9th Debate

GOP debate - 4:00pm - 6:00pm EST 10/9/07

* Note: This article was already posted but I've revised it. The original article is here: http://www.knowthelies.com/?q=node/17.

I've seen this happen many times before with all the debates that included Ron Paul this year. That means, all of the GOP debates are being intentionally botched by a higher power. The news networks that we have offered to us are all mainstream and are very biased. And, to prove it, I've decided to cover this very important issue. You see, it was shortly after the end of the debate, about 7:00pm (EST) that I was told by a good friend that CNBC had pulled the poll results off their site. Ron Paul averaged way above all the other candidates. The polls showed that Ron Paul had an avg. of 80% approval for all who had voted in the poll. All other candidates had less than 5.7% approval rating.

Key gene work scoops Nobel Prize

Two US scientists and their UK collaborator have been awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine for their groundbreaking work in gene technology.

Mario Capecchi, Oliver Smithies and Briton Martin Evans developed a technique known as gene targeting.

It enabled them to replicate human diseases in mice by introducing genetic changes into the animal's stem cells.

The Nobel Committee said this had led to many new insights into conditions such as cancer and heart disease.

US citizens and other residents will require prior approval from Department of Homeland Security to get a job, under new immigration guidelines introduced by the Cabinet and sanctioned by President George W. Bush today.

New Death Sentence on Journalists in Iran (Journalism: To gather and present... exactly as they were doing)

Paris, 5 Aug. (IPS) The wave of executions in the Islamic Republic of Iranian has now reached the Iranian media, as on 16 July 2007, two Kurdish journalists, Mr. Adnan Hassanpour and Mr. Abdolvahed (Hiva) Boutimar were sentenced to death by an Islamic tribunal in Marivan, a Kurdish city in the north-west Iran.

They are to be brought to the scaffold in the coming days. Judiciary spokesman, Mr. Ali Reza Jamshidi, confirmed that these two journalists have been sentenced to death, state media reported on Tuesday, 31 of July.

Death sentence for "profane" writers and journalists is reminiscent of Ayatollash Rouhollah Khomeini’s death fatwa on Anglo-Indian novelist Salman Rushdie

Sub-prime lending slump sends markets into freefall

Stock markets plunged around the globe as central bankers fought for a second day to head off a complete shutdown in the credit markets that could cripple economic activity.

The US Federal Reserve provided emergency funding for the banking system and said it stood ready to do more, but its chairman, Ben Bernanke, faced criticism that he has acted too slowly to stem losses on Wall Street.

The Fed injected $38bn into the financial system yesterday, a day after an even bigger move by the European Central Bank. The ECB also acted again, adding a further €61bn in extra liquidity to the €95bn it released on Thursday.
